Forgive me father, for I have sinned - 07 Ghost

happy lance
OK, I said I was going to do a picspam on some of the anime I've been mainlining recently, so...

Imagine a Prussian-Gothic anime world where demons are real, the clergy are badass, and the hottest, most manly character is named…

* Snerk *

Boyfriend has some kind of 70's porn homoerotic thing going on with the bare chest and the chains, but we'll forgive him that because he is absolutely made of awesome.

Dude has a fucking scythe that shoots out of his fucking arm. How cool is that?

Apparently to get ordained into this church, you have to pass a fairly difficult test of knowledge, and demonstrate your ability to thrash real as well as inner demons. And be gorgeous. 07 Ghost puts the bishie in bishop.

My favorite holy man of all, however, is the fun, flamboyant and faaaaaaabulous Bishop Lance. Dude's got SERIOUS hair.

He's a little tempermental...

But he can smite the baddies without mussing his 'do.

I love Bishop Lance to pieces and want to slash him with the entire cast, including the mermaid.

Unsurprisingly, the bad guys are also dark and delicious:

But guess what kids, it isn't a blue bishonen ghetto without the requisite big-eyed male teenagers voiced by women. Exhibit A is Teito Klein. He's a battle-scarred, abused orphan who nevertheless manages to have massive amounts of angsty UST with pretty much the entire cast, including the mermaid.

But the real reason I watch is for the plot. No, but really. It's fascinating and complex. I especially like their take on the clergy: the church, which superficially seems Catholic, is in fact VERY Japanese, featuring Shinigami (death gods) and reincarnation.

However, note that the pacing is odd in some of the early episodes of the anime, with some parts feeling like filler. To keep the momentum going, I recommend tequila shots for every HOYAY! moment.

mikage et teito

Aaaaaaaaaand something for your hangover.

But seriously, folks, the show gets better and better - and once you've watched all the anime episodes produced so far, you'll go after the manga, which is gorgeous and tightly plotted (much more so than the anime, oddly enough).

Also, the porn? It writes itself.

Not that I would know anything about that...

The reason some of the episodes feel like filler is because they are. lol they have absolutely nothing to do with the manga which is still going on. It just gets even cuter when Teito and Frau 'move on'. I won't say any more until you get to that part. *_~ Try the manga if you get the time, it's totally worth it and the drama cds are freaking hilarious!

I really have no idea why they made the decisions they did in terms of those episodes. There's letting a story breathe and then there's pointless scenes. The manga plot is tight and complicated - they could have spent way more time exploring Teito's backstory or the history of the Raggs Empire or even just more about the Black Hawks. Instead there was just way too much of Teito looking angsty and repeating "Mikage" over and over again. And oh look, another kor.

I agree. When they premiered the manga at Yaoi-con a few yrs ago that was one of the points they discussed. I was really excited while watching because you could sit there with the manga open and follow along, which is why when that ep with the kid and his kor infested father showed up at the church I went 'Wah?!'. If they just stuck to the book it'd have been perfect. But in the long run, I'd still rather have a second season then be made about a few filler eps. I wish they'd continue!

My only issue with the filler eps is that I wonder if a lot of people stopped watching at that point, which in turn kept 07 Ghost from receiving the attention it deserves.

I too would be delighted to see a second season, particularly as there is so much manga goodness now. Speaking of which, I probably should pony up for the licensed manga and DVDs now....

I don't see myself buying Bleach DVDs any way soon, because they're very popular and anyway I'm watching it legally on Hulu. But for a niche market like 07 Ghost, I do believe every dollar helps to keep it going and hopefully get Season 2 rolling.

I so agree with you. Anime!Teito it's just too much angsty :/ But I guess they did what they could with the manga having not so many chapters yet.

Yeah, manga!Teito is a lot less emo. I guess they were shooting for maximum emotional impact when That Bad Thing happens.

Oh yes, and I've absorbed all the manga that's out so far, even the Chinese scans where you have to flip back and forth between the scan and the text English translation. I am an obsessive fangirl...

Ahaha believe me you're not alone. I swear I've been half a twitch from murder waiting for this next chapter to be scanned, japanese or otherwise. Aah the suspense DX

Especially the way the last one ended, what a cliffhanger, ack!!!!

How I wish I could read Japanese, but my fannishness doesn't go as far as learning kanji!
